Position Overview

As a Transportation Services Director , you will develop and enhance both sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships with our carriers, customers, corporate colleagues, and field colleagues by continually improving processes and systems department wide that allow the team to excel in service while improving costs and net profitability.

Responsibilities

Transportation Systems

  • Support all initiatives (strategic, project related, and upkeep) related to systems utilized by the Transportation Department (Inbound and Outbound).

  • Serve as the key liaison between the department and Information Services.

  • Assist new business/changes in business by ensuring that the software required to support the department is part of the overall startup strategy.

Carrier Relationships & Utilization

  • Own process of bidding/sourcing 3rd party outbound carriers for dedicated and demand volatility needs.

  • Continually assess the market for solutions as part of current needs and contingency planning.

  • Drive all contract negotiations by understanding the best possible solution for adaptability, quality of service, and cost.

  • Partner with carriers to help meet operational and strategic requirements of the organization.

  • Scorecard carriers to help understand which carriers are the best fit for our organization and recommend any necessary next steps to maintain or improve overall performance.

Not for Resale Spend Management

  • Manage 3rd Party freight payment process (compliance versus contract/expectations, timely invoicing/payment, and any necessary adjustments).

  • Oversee invoicing and payment process for parts and services that flow through the Transportation department to; ensure timely payment to vendors, proper expense coding of activity, and improvements in the process are constantly assessed and implemented when appropriate.

Operational Metrics, Reporting, and Analytics

  • Own the utilization of data/information from our system(s) in efforts to provide accurate, timely, and value added reporting to team members inside and outside of the department.

  • Create the ability to collect information via automated processes; partner with team members to understand what the best information is to share and the best way to share that information.

  • Where appropriate, create and manage the use of Operator Dashboards to help provide real time data to the Operations group.

  • Partner with Finance to ensure that the Budget, Forecast, and Pro Forma models are dynamic and properly reflect actual costs associated with Transportation expenses and delivery revenue/fuel surcharges.

Management

  • Develop and communicate clear expectations for team members. Communicate performance against expectations to ensure that team has proper direction and feedback.

  • Challenge team to continually improve and take on new tasks to broaden their experience and abilities.

  • Work closely in a well-structured, positive manner to create strong relationships with onsite team members.

  • Constantly assess team structure; if additional team members are necessary, oversee overall process to request, obtain approval, interview, and onboard new associates.

New Business/Major Changes in Business Support

  • Play a major role in supporting the onboarding of new business or major volume shifts (asset changes, system integrations/implementations, operations analytics, etc.)

  • Support entire Transportation Leadership team and EVP of Operations with any strategic requests.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; concentration in Supply Chain preferred; MBA preferred

  • Ten or more years' experience in core Supply Chain Operations roles (Transportation/Warehouse), System selection and implementation/training, Operational Analytics, Budget creation and management,

  • Microsoft Excel & Access, core operating systems and data warehouses (Warehouse Management Systems, Mainframe, Teradata, Manugistics, Manhattan, Retalix, Trans Man, etc.),

  • Proven track record working cross-functionally; ability to work well with all levels of team members with different backgrounds and needs

  • Superior analytical skills; outstanding customer insight with a drive for service

  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality when required

  • Strong leadership and management skills
