Position Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to support a region Houston & Coppell, TX by providing oversight of daily outbound transportation operations while focusing on the longer term outlook of that region. This role is responsible for bridging internal and external stakeholders, promoting best practices, and developing talent within the organization. They promote, implement, ensure compliance/alignment- and occasionally help develop- company and departmental strategic visions. The effectiveness of this individual’s leadership and oversight will be evaluated by: performance to budget, meet/exceed service requirements to include collaboration with the customer on value added activities, cross-functional impact, implementation of consistent processes (across region) that are aligned to the strategic vision, and promoting talent development through sponsoring/supporting IDPs, succession planning, and maintaining a high level of accountability.

Job Description

Operational Excellence – Oversee planning and execution of outbound transportation activity (store delivery) utilizing the private fleet, dedicated pool and/or 3rd party resources. Drive a safety culture at the local level that focuses on identifying leading indicators while ensuring compliance with all company policy, federal, state and local regulations. Partner with key stakeholders to ensure overall operational excellence at the lowest possible cost. Key stakeholders and actions include, but are not limited to:

  • Fleet Operations: Oversee efficient use of resources while providing service (On-Time Delivery) at or above contractual levels. Educate, manage, and engage with local dispatch leadership, whether internal or outsourced, on transportation projects and initiative that support the strategic vision of the: transportation organization, region, and overall C&S/ES3 enterprise.

  • Inbound Transportation/Procurement: Partner with Inbound function for non-dedicated 3rd party carrier needs (shuttles, large capacity constraints, etc.). Support inbound/procurement service level needs and backhaul net margin needs via the utilization of OB resources.

  • Fleet Asset and Maintenance: Ensure the operation has the appropriate equipment to meet daily operational and execution needs while supporting any strategic initiatives for equipment replacement and utilization.

  • DOT Safety and Compliance: Partner with our safety partners to stay current and compliant with regulations, identify trends, and tailor training programs that address opportunities.

This role would make sure that they had equipment to execute business on a daily basis, but would not keep equipment unnecessarily if the company strategy was looking to reduce the number of assets.

Customer Service – Build and maintain strong relationship with all major customers in the region. Participate in store visits, customer meetings, transportation summits, and other engagements. Stay abreast of customer needs and evolve thought around how the transportation operation can better support and bring value to their business. Partner with the proper stakeholders to understand potential operational, financial, and/or contractual impacts, providing feedback to changes on existing and/or on-boarding of new business.

Talent Development - Develop and communicate clear expectations for team members. Challenge team to continually improve and take on new tasks to broaden their experience and abilities. Communicate performance against expectations not only on mid-year and end of year reviews, but on an as needed basis to ensure that team has proper direction and feedback. Work closely in a well-structured, positive manner to create strong relationships with onsite team members. Constantly assess if the team has the right structure and personnel to support the department and if additional team members are necessary and oversee overall process to request, obtain approval, interview, and onboard new associates for your team.

Continuous Improvement and Strategy – Continuously challenge the team to improve - driving improved processes, results and service. Promote best practices relating to execution, planning, cross-functional partnership, and project management. Set goals and expectations that align with company and department strategies; developing and executing KPI’s to improve service and drive down costs.
