Position Overview

As the Manager of Routing you will lead the operation of the outbound planning team. The Manager is responsible for the day to day routing and planning activities, continuous process improvement and implementation of the overall outbound planning strategy. This includes ownership of routing operating procedures, the development and communication of departmental goals and leading the team to exceed key performance indicators.

The Manager directly manages the Supervisor team to ensuring and executing daily workflow and exception management; identifies and implements talent development within the group through coaching, feedback and learning opportunities; continuously evaluates billing schedules and delivery windows in an effort to generate cost savings while meeting customers’ expectations. Builds effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.


  • Oversee regional routing activity and monitor results of the workgroup. Set goals and objectives for this group to promote and support departmental goals. Responsible for leading through unusual and complex situations stemming from weather events, volume surges, and/or customer requests. Additional responsibility includes maintenance/enhancement of system parameters and store delivery/salvage schedules.

  • Maintain delivery schedules for all customers. Balance any schedule changes (holiday or other requested changes) with the execution teams’ ability to execute the changes. Manage the customers (internal and external) expectations with regard to schedule changes.

  • Analyze delivery schedules and networks. Make necessary changes to reduce miles, stops, loads, and improve service to the customer.

  • Develop open flow of communication with the teams that are performing the delivery work (private fleet, dedicated carrier, or3 rd party) and/or regional transportation managers. In some cases, ensure the routing team has complete visibility to driver staffing, schedules, and WH production rates.Receive and analyze information from Fleet operations regarding the daily plan. Make data driven decisions based on the feedback.

  • Coordinate routine delivery rationalization with the customer. Develop a method to capture incremental activity over contractual guidelines.

  • Generate and implement SOP’s as business changes occur, hold the team accountable through consistent feedback, development opportunities and staffing improvements all while striving to improve P&L.


  • Education: BA Degree preferred

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in the Transportation Field with increasing responsibility

  • Experience with DOT regulations

  • Strong time management skills;Advanced ability to problem solve and model complex scenarios; Lead through adversity; communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Routing Software experience is preferred
